Description: | Aims: This unit aims to equip students with a deep conceptual understanding of the theoretical foundations of innovation and change management in response to international trends in higher education (HE). It aims to develop students' ability to apply critically and creatively relevant bodies of management knowledge concerning entrepreneurialism and innovation to specific problems in their own professional areas whilst taking account of the interdependencies between the various areas and functions of universities. Learning Outcomes: * Critical awareness of the role of innovation within key areas of operations management and the role of innovation in the relationship between operations strategy and business strategy both within and between universities in international partnerships * Ability to take an international perspective in understanding the impact of planned and emergent change on the roles and functions of higher education in different countries Skills: Students who successfully complete this unit should develop: * The ability to identify, reflect upon and engage critically with current research and advanced scholarship in the field of international higher education innovation and change management * The ability to acquire and analyse data and information, to evaluate its relevance and validity, and to synthesise it to inform innovation and change management. * The ability to deal with complex issues of entrepreneurship and innovation both systematically and creatively in response to global drivers in HE * The ability to reflect on their learning in the unit and current professional practice with a view to integrate new knowledge concerning entrepreneurship and innovation with past experience and effectively apply it to change management scenarios. * The ability to develop a holistic perspective on a university as an organisation when planning change and think strategically about how the different functions relate to one another. All skills are initially taught/delivered in seminars, and then facilitated through discussion online and individual work. All skills should also be evident in the final assessed work. Content: Typical content covered in the unit includes: * The 'third mission' of universities internationally: societal engagement, knowledge exchange and technology transfer * The nature of innovation in HE - sustaining and disrupting innovations * Evolution of 'the entrepreneurial university' * Universities as learning organisations for innovation and sustainability * Scientific innovation, the 'triple helix' and knowledge transfer * Systems thinking and creative management: Applications to HE * Classification of change theories and practice in HE * Managing the psychological aspects of change The unit will also address a range of related concepts and issues such as quality assurance of innovation in HE; entrepreneurial opportunity identification and development; securing funding for innovation; the role of stakeholders and partnerships in HE innovation. |
