| Description:
| Aims: To provide the student pharmacist with a simulated practice environment in which professional performance standards can be developed and demonstrated, and in which management and leadership skills can be advanced. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this unit, the student pharmacist will be able to: 1. Apply professional judgement in the best interests of the patient and the public. 2. Undertake effective patient centred consultations. 3. Actively support patients and their carers in the safe and effective use of their medicines and devices. 4. Manage and utilise resources in order to ensure efficient work flow and minimise risk in the workplace. 5. Demonstrate effective negotiation skills. 6. Communicate and work effectively with other members of a pharmacy team. 7. Demonstrate good organisational skills to complete tasks to a professional standard. 8. Respond effectively to complaints, incidents and errors and in a manner which demonstrates patient-centred care. 9. Recognise conflicts of interest and utilises appropriate standards of practice. 10. Demonstrate an ability to manage resources effectively and participate in financial planning processes, including the production of a business plan. 11. The simulation will run over a four week period. In week 1 students will be responsible for setting up their virtual pharmacy, advertising and producing a website, and developing a business plan. The simulation itself will run over weeks 2-4. Each morning the student pharmacist team will be presented with typical workload of 40-50 practice problems to prioritise and solve, simulating the background workload within a pharmacy. In addition, students will have to respond to requests in real time from patients, their representatives, other healthcare professionals and business colleagues. Such requests will include having to provide on-call cover to enable a response to out-of-hours emergencies. |
