Description: | Aims: To introduce the student to the concepts and basic equations of thermodynamics. Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student should be able to: * Understand the basic concepts of thermodynamics. Apply the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics to engineering problems. Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently. Content: Introduction and definitions of thermodynamics; properties; work and heat transfer; Equation of state for a perfect gas. First law of thermodynamics, non-flow and steady flow energy equations. Second law of thermodynamics and entropy. Thermodynamic cycles and heat engines, standard air cycles. |
