Description: | Aims: The aims of this unit are: * To provide students with a critical understanding of the range and use of counselling in forensic settings. * To provide students with some practice based skills in counselling useful in forensic settings. Learning Outcomes: After completing this unit students will: * Be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the range of counselling available for forensic psychologists. * Have developed counselling skills applicable to range of settings and client groups in forensic psychology. Skills: Intellectual Skills Students will develop: * The ability to communicate an argument * The ability to evaluate others arguments and research * The ability to critically evaluate and assess research and evidence as well as a variety of other information. * The ability to communicate an argument to other Forensic professionals Professional and Personal Skills * The ability to effectively and efficiently apply principles of forensic psychology within a variety of forensic settings. * The ability to develop sensitivity to the values and interests of others Transferable Skills * Study and learning skills. * Basic information and computing technology skills. * Inter-personal and communication skills. * Presentation skills and verbal communication. * Independent and group working skills * Advanced oral communication skills. Content: This unit will provide students with: * Basic counselling skills applicable to a range of forensic settings * An introduction to a range different models of counselling applicable to forensic psychology * The opportunity to develop and practice a range of counselling skills which are used in forensic settings - for example cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational Interviewing, empathetic listening, person centred skills and formulation. |
