Aims: | To provide students with a critical overview of cutting edge scientific research in the area of human genomics.
|
Learning Outcomes: | After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Access and critically assess primary scientific literature and review articles in the area of human genomics
* Discuss the use of different genomic and other high-throughput techniques in particular research questions of human biology
* Discuss the advantages and limitations of research done in model and non-model species for the understanding of human physiology and disease
* Discuss the importance of comparative genomics approaches to the identification of relevant genes involved in clinically important phenotypes.

Content: | Particular topics will vary from year to year as content is updated to reflect advances in this fast-moving area of life sciences, but they are likely to include; comparative genomics relating to human development, physiology, behaviour and disease; human genome variation in the context of human evolution, dispersion and disease susceptibility; next generation sequencing technology, functional genomics and gene network analyses in relation to the study of development and cancer genomics; epigenetics and obesity; applications of post-genomic techniques to the classification and understanding of mental illness; going beyond genetic material looking at high throughput experimental techniques and proteomics in disease diagnosis.
