[Page last updated: 21 April 2022]
Academic Year: | 2022/3 |
Owning Department/School: | Department of Chemistry |
Credits: | 3 [equivalent to 6 CATS credits] |
Notional Study Hours: | 60 |
Level: | Intermediate (FHEQ level 5) |
Period: |
|
Assessment Summary: | PR 100% |
Assessment Detail: |
|
Supplementary Assessment: |
|
Requisites: | In taking this module you cannot take CH20150 |
Learning Outcomes: | After studying this Unit, students should be able to:
* Recognise the relationship of the experiments to the lecture material presented in the other year 2 units. * Interpret spectroscopic data of a wide variety and to relate this to the spatial, structural and chemical features of the compounds synthesised in the laboratory. * Apply their experience in synthetic organic chemistry to other organic reactions. * Demonstrate their practical skills and techniques to a good level of ability. |
Aims: | To extend and develop laboratory skills and techniques necessary for competent practical organic chemists. To complement some of the lecture material presented in other Year 2 units and to provide experience in synthetic organic chemistry and, in particular, spectroscopic interpretation of structural features of compounds. |
Skills: | Practical skills (F, T, A), report writing (F, A), data analysis (F, A). |
Content: | The experiments have been designed to illustrate the wide diversity of organic chemistry ranging from physical principles to organic synthesis and through to biological and natural product chemistry. These experiments will extend existing, and introduce new, skills and techniques to the students. |
