Learning Outcomes: | After successfully completing this unit a student will be able to:
* Identify, in detail, commonly used engineering materials, manufacturing processes and product assembly processes; appraise them and provide reasons for their use in a particular application; * Complete a systemic process of "mechanical dissection" and product analysis. * Present a detailed understanding of the engineering embodiment details, which can determine the manufacturing processes, and the functioning of the product components in use. * Generate creative design improvement ideas following a reverse engineering process. |
Aims: | This unit aims to:
* Enable students appraise existing products and recognise common mass manufacturing materials, manufacturing processes and product assembly processes; * Develop students' expertise in product analysis * Build students' technical understanding of the engineering design details seen in products. * Enable students to practise reverse engineering in order to create new product and feature ideas. |

Content: | * Theory and methods from reverse engineering regarding materials recognition, manufacturing process recognition and assembly sequence recognition. * Examples of cases and the situations in industry where reverse engineering is used in product development and/or manufacturing. * Systemic approach(es) to the 'tear-down process'. * Framework(s) for deducing the role of product components and manufacturing features. |
