Learning Outcomes: | Students taking this course unit will achieve a broad basic understanding of the structure, development, remit and main policies within Europe. Including the structure and purposes of the European Union and how they are manifested in law in respect of the "four Freedoms". Students will also understand the wider implications of EU policy both within the EU and Europe in general as illustrated by human rights protection of citizens of signatory states of the European Convention and developments regarding environmental protection within Europe generally. |
Aims: | To understand the legal impacts of European integration illustrated by particular reference to:
* The framework and principles of the European Union; * The "four freedoms" in the context of member states, businesses and individuals; * The implications of European measures on environmental protection and the impact on policy and the business environment; * The context of human rights within Europe, with reference to the European Convention of Human Rights and case law. |
Skills: | Research and analytical skills (facilitated and assessed); ability to construct an argument (facilitated, taught and assessed); critical thought (facilitated and assessed); introductory professional legal awareness relevant to management (facilitated, taught and assessed); ability to interface with web resources (facilitated); understanding of broader ethical implications of policies (taught and assessed). |
Content: | The content of this unit will cover: the EU treaty base; EU institutions and decision-making; trade and competition; the single European market and the single currency; the European persepctive and requirements relating to human rights and environmental protection.
Legal topics covered will include: EU legal structure; the fundamental four freedoms: free movement of capital, services, goods and persons; impact of EU legislation on businesses and persons. The Convention on Human Rights will be analysed focussing on case law for specific rights. European policy and measures to protect the environment will be examined both within the EU and in the EU's international perspective. |
