Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
* Demonstrate critical understanding, appreciation and application of the theories and perspectives that inform the literature on leadership. To critically argue how this knowledge can be practically deployed and taken into their future work, life, communities and organisations.
* They will have an understanding of leadership within the context of complex organisations
* They will have an understanding of the dynamics of leadership in groups and a greater awareness of the consequences of individual and collective action and inaction.

Aims: The aim of this unit is to enable students to develop their understanding of leadership and their strength as a leader.
'Leadership' (or 'lack of leadership') is often heralded as the cause of organizational and societal failings, yet is also often proposed as the solution to such problems - i.e. 'we need more leadership'. In this module we will explore different assumptions and understanding of leaders and leadership and how that is translated into impact in a complex and dynamic world.
Develop students' understanding of leadership in theory and in practice.
Draw on students' personal knowledge, experience and reflection in order to better understand leadership within the context of complex organizational relations, dynamics and processes.
The students will have developed an understanding of themselves as a leader, their style, strengths and derailing behaviours. They will set out their own development goals and supporting actions organization.

Skills: Knowledge and understanding: Applies a systematic understanding of knowledge and specialist theoretical and methodological approaches,
suggesting and incorporating interrelationships with other relevant disciplines in abstract and unpredictably complex contexts. The students will develop structured knowledge of the characteristics of leaders and the tools of leadership in the 3 domains of 'Leading Self', 'Leading Others (Teams)' and 'Leading the organisation''.
Appreciation of the social responsibilities of leaders; for society and for the well-being, duty-of-care of their employees/followers.
Skills:
Conceptualisation and critical thinking: Selects and applies advanced principles, concepts, theoretical frameworks and approaches to critically develop systematic responses to existing discourses and methodologies, suggesting new ideas in unpredictably complex contexts.
Analysis and evaluation: Systematically and critically analyses and evaluates, incomplete and/or contradictory data and evidence, developing effective and advanced methodologies to explain and support conclusions and recommendations in unpredictably complex contexts. Ability to critically analyse specific situations requiring leadership using appropriate theoretical models, allied to pragmatic, well-reasoned judgements
Ethical awareness and application: Systematically applies an advanced awareness of ethical and professional values and codes of conduct, to personal and strategic decisions, actions, responsibilities, outcomes and dilemmas, whilst working proactively with others to suggest and advocate appropriate solutions in unpredictably complex contexts. Ability to recognize different options for how to lead in specific situations and to choose how they will act.
Personal responsibility and leadership: Takes responsibility for leading the systematic and critical evaluation of own and others' capabilities, performance and development, applying strategic management approaches in unpredictably complex contexts. Ability to reflect on their earlier learning and practice, so as to integrate new knowledge with past experience and effectively apply it to new situations;

Content: This unit will cover a range of different perspectives on understanding leaders and leadership in the contemporary context.
Topics covered may include:
* The dominant models of leadership in literature
* Difference between leadership and management
* Leadership as an interactive process involving followers
* Behavioural techniques and Mindsets required of effective leaders
* Leadership in the dynamic context of the 4th Industrial Revolution
* The social responsibilities of a leader
* Culture-Shaping as the critical role of the leader
* How to develop as a leader.
