Learning Outcomes:
  • By the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Perform an Income Tax liability calculation for Sole Proprietors and / or Employees and provide tax planning advice.
  • Perform a Corporation Tax liability calculation and provide tax planning advice.
  • Undertake National Insurance and Value Added Tax analyses and planning.
  • Evaluate the characteristics of a Tax (System) using the Principles of Taxation.
  • Identify and evaluate International Tax issues.
  • Understand the distinction and importance of Tax Planning versus Tax Avoidance versus Tax Evasion.



Synopsis: Develop your understanding of the UK tax system and policies for the main types of taxation. You will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare computations of UK tax liabilities and provide tax advice to individuals, partnerships and corporate entities . The unit's emphasis on the principles of taxation will enable you to apply your knowledge to other tax environments.

Content: Key elements to be included:
  • A modern interpretation of the Canons of Taxation
  • The calculation of Business Income for Tax purposes
  • Income Tax for individuals, employees and sole proprietors
  • Corporation Tax
  • PAYE, National Insurance and Value Added Tax
  • Issues of International Tax including the taxation of UK residents and non-residents
  • An ethical perspective on Tax Avoidance strategies
