Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will be able to
* Identify and evaluate the political dimensions of development;
* Elaborate upon the historical frameworks that shape the politics of development;
* identify key theories and debates around the notions of the state, civil society, and state-society relations;
* Critically evaluate key political concepts such as power, authority, legitimacy, democracy;
* assess empirical illustrations and case studies.


Synopsis: You will learn about key theories of the state and examine the multiple pressures on state capacity and prospects of building an effective state for economic and social development. Explore the concept of democracy and the intersection between processes of democratization and development as well as the concept of governance, which has become an integral part of the thinking and practice of development.
