Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Apply hydraulic engineering principles to analyse the behaviour of civil infrastructure systems and their components.(K1,K3)
  • Identify civil infrastructure solutions appropriate to the needs and constraints of its direct users and wider society using knowledge from multiple disciplines. (K2, I3)
  • Evaluate implications of engineering decision making on the safe and sustainable design of infrastructure systems (K4, PT2)
  • Integrate your knowledge of infrastructure design and construction in an unfamiliar design context and reflect upon your design choices as a team. (PT4, I3)

Synopsis: You will be introduced to the principles required to analyse and design civil engineering infrastructure, including basic fluid mechanics, pipe flow and open channel flow.

Content: Principles of fluid mechanics: hydrostatics, continuity, energy and momentum;
Pipe flow;
Open channel flow;
Forces on bodies in a fluid.
