Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
  • Work singly, as part of a team or lead teams to provide a competent service
  • Be organised and practice self-management when working independently
  • Be aware of individual level of competency and professional experience to ensure they are unlikely to bring profession into disrepute
  • Ability to offer impartial advice on construction related issues, relevant legislation and risks and identify and describe client and end user requirements, priorities and objectives.
  • Ability to coordinate and engage in design team interaction, resolve construction related challenges and disputes, where appropriate, undertake construction inspection responsibilities, including completing site visits and commenting on contractors and sub-contractors work in relation to architectural drawings.
  • Show a good understanding of construction environmental physics and its application for designing optimum visual, thermal, acoustic environments, and energy use and carbon emissions.
  • Be able to work with an understanding the implications of fire on the design and specification of buildings to minimise risk.



Synopsis: This unit will bring together the material covered in the academic taught sessions with your practical experience through a case study of a project in your practice. This will provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours demanded of an Architect.

Content: The Case Study Report should outline details of the practice within which the student works and their role. Define the physical and contractual context and constraints of the project. Describe the process/es utilised to manage and deliver the project such as design options explored or design workshops held. Identify which colleagues or specialist consultants contributed to the design development and what their role was. Describe how the learning outcomes attributed to this unit are met and demonstrated. Show examples of work undertaken during the case study including text, annotated sketches, diagrams, drawings or digital models, notes, specifications, schedules, visualisations, photographs, physical models. Conclude with a reflective appraisal of process and result explaining how the output met the brief.
