Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: Describe the theoretical and mathematical basis of spectroscopy and the physical basis of simple analytical techniques; Apply knowledge of spectroscopy and analytical techniques to solve problems involving qualitative and quantitative analysis; Identify the structure of molecules from analysis of spectroscopic/analytical data; Judge and rationalise your selection of analytical techniques in order to characterise compounds and solve analytical chemistry problems.


Synopsis: You will be equipped with the skills and toolkit needed to characterise reaction products. This unit will introduce academically and industrially relevant analytical and spectroscopic techniques. You will be exposed to the underlying theories of analytical chemistry, spectroscopy and appreciate modern methodology.

Content: Topics will include: - Maths applied to analytical chemistry and spectroscopy, (e.g. NMR, IR, UV spectroscopies) together with simple statistical tools; - General theory of separation and analytical techniques (e.g. TLC, GC, MS); - Spectroscopy theory, energy levels, Boltzmann distribution, explaining the transitions leading to an NMR, IR, UV or rotational spectrum; - Relate IR, NMR, mass spec. data to functional groups and molecules.
