  • Demonstrate and describe the source of chemicals, their life-cycle and related sustainability issues;
  • Recognise the different ways chemicals are used in society (energy vectors, materials, fine chemicals);
  • Recognise that the structure of chemicals influence their properties and their applications;
  • Discuss the role of chemistry in historical technological advances and the development of other sciences.



Synopsis: This unit will introduce you to the role that chemistry has played in shaping todays society through selected examples. This unit will also improve your abilities to appreciate the life cycle of elements and chemicals in the context of their utilisation, and to study some of the important developments of Chemistry throughout history.

Content: Topics in the unit will include:
The sources of chemicals and their alternatives - fossil fuels, minerals, metals and biomass;
Chemistry and Health - the role of chemistry in feeding the world and saving lives;
Chemistry and Power - the role of chemistry in providing and saving energy;
Chemistry and Materials - the role of chemistry in providing the tools to build the world;
Chemistry and People - the role of chemistry in bringing people together.
