HL30563: Environmental and occupational exercise physiology

[Page last updated: 23 October 2023]

Academic Year: 2023/24
Owning Department/School: Department for Health
Credits: 7.5 [equivalent to 15 CATS credits]
Notional Study Hours: 150
Level: Honours (FHEQ level 6)
Period:
Semester 2
Assessment Summary: EXCB 100%
Assessment Detail:
  • Examination closed book (EXCB 100%)
Supplementary Assessment:
Like-for-like reassessment (where allowed by programme regulations)
Requisites: Before taking this module you must take HL30556 OR take HL30557
Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe and explain the physiological strain induced by performing sport and exercise in various extreme environments
  2. Critically discuss acute physiological responses associated with short-term exposure to extreme environments
  3. Critically discuss chronic adaptive physiological responses to prolonged exposure to extreme environments
  4. Analyse and critically evaluate practical strategies to help optimise function and performance in extreme environments
  5. Analyse and appraise how sport governing bodies and various occupational groups protect individuals from injury and illness

Aims: To examine the physiological responses of humans to extreme environments and evaluate the impact of these environments on function and exercise performance. Using real-world examples, the unit also aims to examine physiological adaptations and maladaptive responses experienced when humans are exposed to extreme environments for prolonged periods; and explores practical strategies to help optimise function and performance and safeguard individuals exercising and working in extreme environments.

Content: The unit will focus on:
  • the physiological strain induced by performing exercise in various extreme environments, including hot, cold and high altitude environments;
  • the acute physiological responses which allow humans to maintain function/performance in such environments;
  • the chronic adaptive physiological responses which occur following prolonged or repeated exposure to environmental extremes;
  • practical strategies to help optimise function and performance in extreme environments;
  • how sport governing bodies and various occupational groups protect individuals from maladaptation leading to injury and illness.
