Learning Outcomes: Apply the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics to engineering problem. Apply the continuity, momentum and Bernoulli's equations to engineering problems. Use dimensional analysis.


Synopsis: This unit introduces you to the fundamental concepts and equations of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. You'll learn how to apply the equations to engineering problems, including power generation cycles and the generation of lift by an aerofoil.

Content: Introduction and definitions of thermodynamics; properties; work and heat transfer. Equation of state for a perfect gas. First law of thermodynamics, non-flow and steady flow energy equations. Second law of thermodynamics and entropy. Thermodynamic cycles and heat engines, standard air cycles. Introduction and definitions of fluid dynamics. Stress and viscosity. Fluid statics; pressure, forces and moments. Fluid kinematics; continuity equation; Bernoulli equation; Bernoulli equation with losses and external work; curved streamlines and rotating flow; momentum equation for a control volume; dimensional analysis and similarity.
