Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Analyse financial market structure and bank performance;
  • Understand and analyse different bank business models, including commercial banking, investment banking and diversified business models;
  • Identify and understand the different types of risk facing international banks and how to measure these risks;
  • Comprehend the nature and role of international bank regulation;
  • Appraise the policy prescriptions of international financial institutions in trying to resolve international financial crises;
  • Explore the role of banks in the transition to a sustainable economy by funding and supporting environmentally and socially responsible project enterprises.



Synopsis: In this unit you will develop a broad understanding of the theory of banking, the role of banks in the economy, the main types of services offered by banks, the regulatory framework in which banks operate and various aspects of their operation. You will gain the knowledge and skills to evaluate a range of interactions between banks and their clients, analyse their performance and assess the susceptibility of banks to financial fragility.
