Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Develop and present a business plan for a retailing venture
  • Pitch for start-up capital
  • Apply and evaluate their learning from the course to running a retailing start-up
  • Critique and evaluate their performance and outcomes against, their original plan
  • Present conclusions in written and oral form
  • Participate in team activity and contribute to the management of the group
  • Reflect on the outcomes of an activity and the processes that led to those outcomes
  • Identify literature relevant to a chosen business issue and link it to practical experience



Synopsis: Apply what you have learned in the first two semesters by working on your own or in teams to launch a retail venture. You will develop a business plan and pitch for seed money, purchase stock, market, and run your business over a six-week period. Through active problem solving and decision making, you have the opportunity to develop such skills as: relationship building; buying and merchandising; e-commerce and omnichannel management; business insights; leadership; entrepreneurship; communications

Content: The unit is intended to allow students to conduct team projects applying the skills, concepts, and techniques acquired in the taught programme to running their own retailing start-up. 1. The group project element will be the pitching and running of the start-up. 2. A self-managed project whereby students are required to reflect on the links between their team experiences, the retailing academic theory from semesters one and two, and on the impact of the experience on their personal development. Students will receive formal guidance in whole cohort briefings on:
  • Presentation skills.
  • Business plan writing.
  • Project Management.
  • Reflective Writing.
