Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit, the student should be able to:
  • organise effective notes
  • demonstrate use of library and appropriate computing facilities in the University to research and to write essays and laboratory reports in a scientific style
  • calculate basic statistical distributions and summarise data
  • work safely in a laboratory
  • perform appropriate dilutions of drug solutions
  • set up simple tissues for measurement of physiological responses
  • carry out standard pharmacological assays
  • analyse continuous and quantal data
  • report data in scientific journal style.



Synopsis: Develop a range of personal and professional skills through individual, group work and self-directed study to support your academic studies and future career. Gain expertise in using web-based resources to research and write in a scientific style. Learn to conduct work safely in a laboratory. Advance your knowledge of data analysis and presentation Explore the role of the pharmacologist and the ethics of pharmacological research in drug development.

Content: Effective study skills and note taking introduction to university computer facilities, use of electronic communications, the library and bibliographic searches, basic word-processing and spreadsheet use introduction to pharmacology practical classes use of statistical software to analyse statistical distributions, calculation of mean, median, variance, regression group work on preparing and giving short oral presentations on a scientific theme.
