By the end of the Unit, you will be able to:
1.articulate the influences of the design and development of cities, and the theories of urban design and the planning of communities, with the ability to analyse an urban project and its design conception 2. appraise the influence of design and development of cities, past and present on the contemporary built environment and how cities can be more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable 3. explore how the theories, practices and technologies of the arts influence and impact on architectural design 4.explain the significant ideas in the development of the Modern Movement and its cultural, social, political and intellectual histories, with knowledge of canonical twentieth-century buildings and their place in the history of architecture 5. outline the role of the architect within the design team and construction industry, considering what laws affect architects, the nature of professionalism, appropriate management of risk and the duties and responsibilities to clients, building users, co-professionals and the wider society. 6. outline the importance of an ethical approach which prioritises health and safety, ensures competence and collaboration in the design team, and advocates for sustainable and regenerative approaches to design. |
Synopsis: | This Unit examines a range of theoretical positions associated with the formal design of buildings in western architecture.
You will be introduced to general ideas and ideals, which have shaped cities, and become familiar with the techniques of urban analysis and principles of urban design. You will explore how the arts have influenced architectural design and survey the ideology and practices of the Modern Movement.
This Unit helps you integrate design and professional skills in the workplace and will prepare you for your first placement experience. |
