  • Outline and describe the basics of industrial chemical processes and chemical plants;
  • Recognise the challenges associated with the commercialisation of chemical technologies;
  • Identify the impact of chemistry on the environment and contrast methods to mitigate these impacts.



Synopsis: In this unit you will explore the chemical industry through selected examples. This unit will improve your appreciation of the challenges associated with the commercial utilisation of chemical technologies.

Content: Topics in the unit will include:
Major chemical industrial processes;
Low carbon and emerging sustainable chemical technologies;
Towards the commercialisation of chemical technologies - scale-up, intellectual property; life-cycle and techno-economic analyses;
Chemistry and the Environment - health and safety, risk management, the impact of chemistry on the climate.
