Learning Outcomes:
  • Contrasting educational research methodologies�¿(qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods).
  • Describing and justifying how, and why, you would use 1) a specific research design and 2) suitable research method(s), to answer a particular educational research question.
  • Developing an ethical and theoretically informed research proposal.
  • Critically reflecting on the relationship between research and professional practice.
  • Examining different educational or career pathways.
  • Using software for qualitative and quantitative data analysis.



Synopsis: Further the knowledge you gained in Year 1 to continue your preparation for your final year project. You will deepen your understanding of educational research methodologies by exploring the links between research and practice. Specifically, you will critically examine research methodologies in relation to a range of diverse and prominent education-related topics. You will also explore educational or career pathways as preparation for placement and/or a job.

Content: You will engage with multiple research case studies which explore prominent educational issues in a range of educational settings. In doing so, you will both practice and develop your understanding of the entire research process, including:
  • The relationship between professional practice and educational research.
  • Reviewing appropriate literature.
  • Research aims and questions.
  • Research designs and methodologies (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods and non-empirical).
  • Research analysis (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Ethical considerations.
  • Quality criteria.
You will explore the links between your research interests, educational experiences and your future professional practice. You will consider different educational career pathways as preparation for placement and/or work.
