Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to: Discuss the current and future implications using a specific digital technology in an educational practice context with which you are familiar, evaluating its impact on accessing and participating in education (SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 9, SDG 17). Synthesise a range of relevant theoretical and empirical research to argue a position with respect to digital technology use and its impact in a specific educational context (SDG 4). Evaluate the ways in which a specific digital technology mediates educational practice in a context with which you are familiar. Demonstrate appropriate choice of digital media to communicate ethically a message relevant to selected stakeholders regarding the educational use of digital technologies in a specific practice context with which you are familiar. Critically reflect on the wider cultural, social and environmental impact of decisions regarding the use (or not) of digital technologies in education with reference to your own context (SDG4, SDG7, SDG9, SDG 14, SDG17).


Synopsis: Evaluate the impact of digital technologies in education and analyse opportunities, challenges, ethical dilemmas and risks in relation to sustainable development. You will investigate how learning and collaboration are being transformed by digital media, and the rapid and dynamic growth of the internet, mobile and smartphone usage, big data, AI, VR, and other trends. You will explore the significant impact they have on education and challenges that need to be addressed.

Content: Introduction to Digital Technologies and Education - Critique the role of key stakeholders in driving educational change through the use of digital technologies. The impact of digital technologies on learning in the classroom and beyond - Discuss how digital technologies mediate educational practices inside and outside institutions. Inequalities in education and the implication of digital technology solutions - Evaluate the potential impact digital technologies can have on accessing and participating in education. Individualised education and the personalisation agenda. Big Data AI and educational decision making. Designing resources with digital media. Digital technologies and the future(s) of school. Consider alternative futures for education shaped by digital technologies.
