Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between education and sustainable development 2. Critically engage with the tensions within sustainable development and how these shape education policy and practice at the national and global level 3. Recognise the different macro, meso and micro forces in the making of education and international development policies 4. Apply and critique the main theories underpinning education and development policies and practices within different educational contexts and countries, particularly in the Global South 5. Identify and reflect critically on the intended and unintended consequences of different education and international development policies


Synopsis: Critically analyse the relationship between education and sustainable development. You'll develop your understanding of key theories, policies and practices in different educational contexts and countries, particularly in the Global South. You'll also explore important challenges, tensions and priorities related to social, environmental and economic development, focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of decolonisation, environmental justice and human rights.

Content: In this unit, the following topic areas will be engaged with:
  • Historical overview of education and international development post-1945 through to current day, including key global actors, aspirations, agendas and debates
  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), including critiques of notions of sustainability and development.Education and economic development, including economic arguments for investing in education such as 'human capital theory', 'neoliberalism' and 'global competitiveness'
  • Education as a human right and in the context of other rights such as linguistic rights
  • Indigenous perspectives on education and sustainable living and how these challenge fundamental assumptions of mainstream educational development
  • Education, capabilities and social justice: how education can contribute to the development of individual capabilities, the relationship between education and social justice and how learning capabilities could be enhanced
  • Education's response to environmental and human crises
  • Enduring legacies of colonialism in education and international development, looking at a range of contemporary critical perspectives, such as decolonisation, anticolonialism, racism and the divide between a 'Global North' and a 'Global South'
