By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
demonstrate a critical awareness of the social, political, economic and cultural factors that influence international language education;
demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of current theories relating to different types of curriculum and pedagogies for language education, and link these theories to practice;
develop language teaching materials and pedagogies which are appropriate to the needs of students in specific real-world contexts;
critically reflect on the implications of a decolonised approach to international language education;
demonstrate awareness of the principles of sustainable development in the context of international language education. |
Synopsis: | Reflect critically on your own understanding of the curriculum and pedagogy of language education.
You'll raise your awareness of the theoretical and practical issues of developing appropriate, sustainable curricula, pedagogies and materials to suit your specific social, political, economic and cultural context. You'll also consider local knowledges and decolonising approaches to international language education. |
Content: | To achieve the aims stated above, students will be supported in learning how critically to engage with relevant literature and to use it to inform the evaluation of their own experience of language learning. It is anticipated that topics will include:
The politics and policies of language education.
TESOL in the global marketplace.
Developing context appropriate TESOL curricula and pedagogies for sustainable development.
Approaches, methods and post-methods in language teaching.
English Medium Education (EME) and Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
Curriculum and syllabus design for international English language education.
Language programme evaluation.
Materials evaluation and development for international English language education.
Language teaching materials as cultural artefacts. |
