Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit students will be able to:
* Identify, explore, and discuss issues concerning the systems of language and their implications for language use, learning, and teaching.
* Apply textually-oriented and socially-oriented approaches to (critical) discourse analysis.
* Identify and critique recent studies on language awareness and discuss their relevance to particular language teaching contexts.
* Analyse language awareness issues in a particular pedagogical context and design a training project which addresses those issues, employing a variety of strategies and providing a rationale for their selection and use.
* Evaluate national language education documents (e.g. policies and curricula) in light of current understandings of language awareness issues.
* Critically evaluate English as an international language in relation to the English that is taught in a range of different contexts.


Synopsis: Explore linguistic diversity through a systemic examination of language and how it is used in context. You'll analyse and discuss issues surrounding language and its implications for the L2 classroom. This unit will help you develop a critical understanding and sensitivity of beliefs, attitudes and values related to whose English language we teach, how we teach it and why we teach it within a context relevant to you as a teacher of English.

Content: This unit will include the following content: Language in its social context Text and discourse analysis: Genre, gender, identity, ideology, multimodality in a range of texts Conversation analysis Pragmatics and sociocultural awareness Corpus linguistics Multi-literacies World Englishes, English as an International Language & English as a Lingua Franca Native-speakerism.
