Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to: demonstrate critical understanding informed by research, theory and professional experience of the nature, scope and limits of educational management practice and its development within the wider policy context analyse critically prescriptions for educational management practice and its development within the wider policy context apply this understanding and critical analysis in reviewing management practice in their professional context and considering how it may be improved reflect on how to utilize leadership theory, policy, and practice in order to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals


Synopsis: Explore leadership and management in educational organisations. You will focus on issues of culture, gender, policy, power, accountability and social justice for middle and senior leadership roles. Engaging more deeply with policy, theory and practice, you will gain an overview of key concepts and look at selected areas of practice to reflect on professional practice within educational organisations.

Content: This unit engages students with eight topics:
Introducing key concepts in educational leadership and management (SDG4)
Exploring educational management and leadership (SDG4,10) - the differences between the two concepts
Leadership and Culture (SDG4,5,16)
Leadership and Educational Organisations (SDG4)
Policy, Power and Accountability (SDG 10)
Middle and Senior Leadership roles (SDG 4,5,8)
Gender and Leadership (SDG4,5,10)
Educational Leadership for Social Justice (SDG 4,16)
