Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
  • Continuously develop their professional skills and practice on how to teach English as an international language;
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding and sensitivity towards approaches, design and practice of English language teaching;
  • Recognise approaches and issues related to the design of teaching materials and teaching practice;
  • Place their own experiences within a conceptual framework constructed from the plurality of developments and issues through a self-reflective approach;
  • Demonstrate skills relevant for language educators as reflective practitioners.



Synopsis: Gain the professional skills and practices of English language education. You'll explore current issues and debates in English language teaching and classroom practices. You'll challenge your thinking and assumptions about how English is taught and learned worldwide and develop your professional practice through a more critical understanding of language teaching approaches, techniques and design.

Content: This unit will cover the following content:
  • Skills of a reflective practitioner (e.g. reflective learning journal, Kolb's reflective learning cycle)
  • Issues relating to classroom talk and interaction (e.g. translanguaging, giving constructive feedback, giving clear instructions)
  • English language teaching skills
  • Global issues in English language teaching (e.g. decolonisation, UN SDGs, climate change)
  • Project-based learning skills
  • Team working and debating skills
  • Professional skills for continuous professional development
