Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Synthesise knowledge to critically assess key global and/or local challenges and the role of education in responding to them.
  • Understand and critique the SDGs and underpinning concepts (global citizenship; decolonisation; climate change; sustainable development; inclusion; equality; social justice).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the link between the SDGs and education, especially in relation to educational research, policy and practice.



Synopsis: Explore the role of education in responding to current global and/or local issues and consider ways in which education might contribute to more sustainable, equitable and inclusive futures. You will develop an understanding of key concepts in relation to education, such as: - global citizenship - decolonisation - climate change - Inclusion - social justice

Content: This unit engages students with eight topics: The SDGs and global challenges for education: People, Planet and Prosperity (SDGs 1-17) UNESCO 2030: Sustainable development and Education for Sustainable Development: introducing, exploring and critiquing the concepts (SDGs 1-17) Citizenship within and beyond the classroom (SDG4) Education and employment (SDG8) Creating inclusive, democratic classrooms (SDG4, SDG16) Climate change (SDG 13) Digital learning for a more sustainable and equitable future (SDG4, SDG9) Education for wellbeing (SDGs 3, 4, 6, 7, 12, 14, 15)
