Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will be able to: reflect on the implementation, the practice and the epistemic justice of teaching through English (SDG 4, SDG 16, SDG 17); demonstrate awareness of current approaches and concepts relating to teaching through English; demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between language, communication, comprehension, learning and equitable education (SDG 4); analyse and support the needs of learners studying through the medium of English; critically reflect and comment on the teaching of an English medium programme that enhances inclusion and equity for all learners (SDG 4, SDG 5); identify a range of appropriate strategies for teaching an English medium programme; suggest implications for the professional development of English medium educators (SDG 4).


Synopsis: Dive into the fast-evolving world of teaching through English. You will engage in critical discussions and debates related to the latest developments in: - teaching and learning - content language integrated learning (CLIL) - teacher development - research and practice You will also explore the design, evaluation and implementation of effective teaching materials.

Content: This unit will engage students in a discussion, reflection and critical appreciation of: Interpretations of EME, including the content-language continuum Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Analysing educational discourse Disciplinary literacies in EME Genres in EME Teaching strategies for English medium classes: 'Language conscious' teaching (incl. subject specific terminology, signposting, pace, intonation elicitation, feedback, backchannelling) Teaching materials for English medium classes: Designing, selecting, reviewing materials for teaching in an EME context Teacher education and development for EME
