Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply economic insights to explain why environmental problems arise.
  • Ability to characterise the state of the environment using simple models.
  • Apply understanding of incentives to design policy instruments optimally, as well as, in cases where optimality cannot be achieved to control for behaviour.
  • Ability to provide a comprehensive assessment of environmental policies.
  • Develop knowledge of the literature and be able to evaluate and present journal articles or working papers.
  • Discuss key current environmental issues and identify solutions.



Synopsis: "Explore why environmental problems arise and how to regulate for them. You will explore issues such as: - environmental depletion - valuation of environmental resources - measuring optimality and cost-effectiveness During this unit, You will learn about the economists toolbox of policy measures, and how they can be implemented in practice. "

Content: This unit covers issues related to environmental resources and regulation of behaviour impacting the environment. As its starting point it takes the neoclassical economic framework and embeds the environment within it. In this way, loss of welfare due to environmental degradation is apparent and from there we study the various ways in which government can introduce interventions to raise welfare.
