Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Set up equations to describe the dynamic behaviour of simple electro-mechanical systems and find their natural and forced responses.
  • Describe the influence of imperfections on buckling and determine buckling loads for simple mechanical systems.
  • Calculate the skin friction and drag caused by boundary-layer flow over external surfaces, and the pressure losses in duct/pipe networks,
  • Solve simple heat transfer problems of individual or combinations of conduction in solids, convection and radiation.

The unit contributes to the following AHEP 4th edition learning outcomes: C1,C2,C3.

Synopsis: This unit introduces you to basic principles in key topics in mechanical engineering, such as solid mechanics, heat transfer, fluid flow, materials selection and manufacturing processes.

Content: Single and multiple degree of freedom systems Free Vibration, Natural frequencies and damping ratios Harmonic Excitation Stress, buckling and fatigue Heat transfer - conduction, convection and radiation Fluid flow - boundary layers, skin friction and pressure losses Properties of materials and selection of materials Manufacturing processes.
