Students who complete this Unit will:
Gain knowledge and understanding of key developments in European history since the French Revolution;
Be able to identify the impact that ideologies, religions and cultural movements have had on ideas of Europe;
Develop an ability to analyse key historical developments through primary and secondary sources;
Be able to problematise the legacy of key historical and cultural developments in the present.

| Synopsis: | Explore how different notions of `Europe emerged over the last three centuries. Beginning with the Age of the Enlightenment, you will engage with key themes such as religion, war, colonialism, culture, protest and European integration. You will learn how to analyse primary sources and debate different viewpoints on the historical and cultural transformation of the continent and its relationship with the rest of the world.

| Content: | The Unit aims at developing an insight into modern European history by focusing on key themes and developments. Topics could include (indicative):
Secular and Religious Ideas of Europe
European colonialism: expansion and resistance
Redesigning Europe: nationalism, the rise of communism and WWI
Europe in the interwar period: fascism, communism and the search for peace
Europe in WWII: from catastrophe to rebirth
Western and Eastern Europe in the Cold War
Transnational protests and cultures in 1960s Europe
European colonialism: from decolonisation to migration
The European Integration project: from the end of WWII to 1992
The rise of Green and pacifist movements in Europe
Challenges to European collective memory
