  • Recognise and reflect upon the role of arts and culture in shaping socio-political events and identities, in Europe, Latin America and China.
  • Identify, evaluate, and make use of techniques of cultural analysis to critically engage with the debates around notions of 'self' and 'other' in Europe, Latin America and China.
  • Locate and evaluate information in a variety of media and use it to identify and solve problems.
  • Develop and make use of an ability to analyse cultural artefacts orally.
  • Plan, undertake, and report in-depth research using the methodologies and artefacts studied in class.

Synopsis: Explore how identities are created and undone through cultural artefacts such as literary texts, visual arts, music, popular culture and or social media. You will examine 20th and 21st century evidence from across the world, with a focus on Europe, Latin America, and China. Working with cultural artefacts, you will delve into the intricacies of intercultural dialogue and identify opportunities for global change, developing your analytical skills and applying them to different media.

Content: Definitions of 'self' and 'other' over time. How are stereotypes constructed and perpetuated? How can they be undone? Cinematic analysis. Representations of the 'other' on screen. Visual analysis. Who makes art and why does it matter? Textual and literary analysis. Writing and Reading for Change. Theatre and live performances. Resisting on stage. Popular culture - a new discipline? (comic books, 'genre' literature, TV series etc.). How to analyse sound? The music of protest. Social media - a new (cultural) movement?
