Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: After completing this unit, the students will be able to:
* analyse contemporary security challenges coming from Asia;
* demonstrate an understanding of the role of Asia in contemporary world politics;
* show an appreciation of the relevance of Asian security-related issues and cases for studying global security;
* develop an understanding of the relations between Asian states.


Aims:
* To equip students with theoretical and conceptual tools used in examining issues related to Asian security.
* To conduct an in-depth study of some of the most significant challenges concerning Asian, and by extension global, security.
* To study Asian security concerns in terms of their historical contexts.
* To understand the rationale behind European and American involvement in the region.

Skills: Skills in critical analysis, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content: The topics studied on the unit will include: Asian security in a global context; 'AfPak' security and international intervention; South Asian security and the nuclear dimension; Islamic terrorism in Asia and global security; conflict and cooperation in East Asia and beyond; identity and conflict in southeast Asia; Central Asian security and the new 'great game'; non-traditional security issues in Asia - human rights, poverty and the environment.
