- decide which language services and specialisms to offer
- market your services
- determine the resources you'll need
- set your rates
- manage your time
The skills you develop will enable you to set up a freelance business as soon as you have finished your studies, should you choose to do so.
|
Content: | The unit begins with a session outlining initial steps that new freelancers need to take. You will then consider which specific language services you plan to offer and which specialisms might be suitable for you to work on developing. In view of their importance, you will look in depth at a wide variety of marketing techniques employed by freelance linguists. You will consider how to invest time and money in continuous professional development, and what other resources you will need to buy for your business. The unit includes a thorough examination of how freelancers should set their rates. Lastly, you will examine how to manage your time when working for yourself. All classes will comprise a mix of lecture, discussion and in-class exercises. Taken together, the four coursework assignments will comprise a business plan for setting up your freelance business.
