Upon completion of the unit, you will be able to
- Demonstrate an ability to analyse contemporary challenges concerning the Asian continent.
- Show an understanding of the role of Asia in contemporary world politics.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply Political Science (and cognate) theories to issues and cases of Asian domestic politics and international relations.
- Show an appreciation of the relevance of Asian security-related challenges and cases for studying global security.
- Develop an understanding of the international relations between Asian states as well as sub-regions.

Synopsis: | Study some of the most significant political, social and security challenges concerning the Asian continent.
Asian politics-related concerns are becoming increasingly significant, so a thorough and comprehensive understanding of global politics is not possible without studying the continent of Asia.
You'll apply a variety of conceptual and theoretical lenses to cases from the sub-regions of Southern Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia and Central Asia.

Content: | - The first two lectures will look on setting the conceptual and theoretical ground for the study of the Asian continent. Theoretical approaches from a variety of social science areas will be utilised to prepare students to study the continent.
- The students will study each sub-region of Asia for two weeks making it a comprehensive module covering the entire continent.
- The issues concerning the continent will include environmental crises, resource curse, foreign-aid dependence, civil society resistance movements, geopolitical tensions and great power rivalry for control over Asia.
