Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding with the main theories of human development.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of major debates and controversies in human development theory and research.
  • Utilise your knowledge to discuss issues in human development.



Synopsis: Explore human development from birth through to young adulthood, learning about the changes that occur during this important period. Youll evaluate the mechanisms of underlying developmental changes and explore both cognitive and socio-cultural approaches. Youll develop a critical understanding of the major theories and debates in developmental psychology, increasing your familiarity with the methodologies used in developmental psychology research.

Content: This unit will cover the following topics: Perceptual development, or how infants begin to make sense of the world. Cognitive Development, discussing both Piaget and Vygotskian approaches. Discuss language development and how children learn to acquire and use language. Explore research around emotional development and its impact on other areas of development. A range of further topics will be covered, which are subject to change due to both the shifting nature of Developmental Psychology as well as particular staff interests. Throughout all content, the methodologies underlying what we know about human development will be evaluated.
