Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit you will be able to:
  • Critically examine a number of general issues, including concepts of psychological disorder, diagnostic systems frequently used to classify mental health disorders and their alternatives.
  • Critically examine psychological, biological and social factors that contribute to the development of disorders.
  • Evaluate theoretical models that have been applied to understanding different psychological disorders (e.g., anxiety disorders, depression, psychosis).
  • Link the causative factors outlined in models of psychological disorders to the interventions that are used to treat them.
  • Assess and evaluate approaches to the psychological treatment of mental health disorders.



Synopsis: Develop knowledge in the field of clinical psychology. You will be introduced to the fundamental characteristics of psychological disorder, the principle elements of psychological models used in the clinical field, and the work of clinical psychologists.

Content: The content of this unit consists of: Discussion of the phenomenology of psychological disorders, and approaches taken to classifying them. Explanation of models of disorders, with a focus on psychological approaches. Consideration of the fundamental principles of cognitive-behavioural theory and practice. Moving beyond the individual to examine the various sociocultural factors that impact on abnormal psychology. Exploring links between the nature of conceptualisations of psychological disorders and the interventions developed to treat them.
