Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you should be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the professional and ethical standards and codes of conduct for clinical psychologists, and the governance and practice issues relevant to psychological research in health contexts
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and range of practical skills involved in Clinical Psychology assessment
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of formulation in clinical psychology practice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms involved in therapeutic change, with particular relevance to cognitive behavioural interventions
  • Critically appraise key therapeutic intervention approaches, and develop intervention goals and plans
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the professional and personal skills relevant to Clinical Psychology practice including the use of supervision



Synopsis: Develop your knowledge of Clinical Psychology Practice in context. You will learn about the professional and ethical standards for clinical psychologists, understand theory underpinning clinical intervention, and develop foundational practical skills required as practitioners such as interviewing, assessment, and formulation. You will learn from staff with a range of clinical expertise, and have the chance to practice skills in pairs and small groups.

Content: This unit will provide you with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings and practical skills involved in Clinical Psychology assessment. It will introduce you to the governance and practice issues relevant to psychological research in health contexts. You will develop a range of assessment skills relevant to clinical psychology practice including behavioural assessment, clinical interviewing, and psychometric assessment. Furthermore, you will be introduced to the nature of formulation in clinical psychology practice and the mechanisms involved in therapeutic change, with relevance to cognitive behavioural intervention.
