Requisites: Students taking this unit must be familiar with the concepts of Receptor Pharmacology (self-study material provided)
Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this unit will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of the major pharmacological and physiological regulation of the autonomic, renal and cardiovascular systems; Demonstrate knowledge of the role these regulatory mechanisms play in the aetiology of major cardiovascular diseases; Explain and interpret the action of drugs currently used in treatment of major cardiovascular diseases; Demonstrate knowledge of the methods available to study drug effects on these systems.

Synopsis: "Develop knowledge of the physiology, pathology and pharmacology of the autonomic, renal and cardiovascular systems and the underlying concepts of the action of drugs on these systems. Demonstrate knowledge of the methods used to study drug effects."

Content: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) and; Pharmacology of parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the ANS; Pharmacology of the skeletal neuromuscular junction. Pharmacology of the kidney and mechanism of action of diuretic drugs; Cardiovascular pharmacology and physiology (mechanisms of excitation, contraction and relaxation of the heart and blood vessels); Mechanisms of action of drugs used in treatment of main groups of cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, coronary heart disease and heart failure);
