On successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of their role as a responsible and accountable future prescriber who appreciates the legal and ethical implications of their decisions. [GPhC 8] 2. Apply knowledge of medicines including pharmacological and pharmacokinetic properties to select safe and effective treatment options appropriate to the student's defined scope of practice. [GPhC 18] 3. Demonstrate a recognition of the limits of their own knowledge and skill as applied to prescribing decisions, including knowing when to refer to another member of the healthcare team. [GPhC 29 and 32] 4. Demonstrate an ability to engage in shared and best-interests decision making with patients and carers as it relates to their future practice as a prescriber. [GPhC 5 and 6] 5. Apply evidence-based decision-making in all aspects of prescribing appropriate to their defined scope of practice including a recognition of possible external influences on prescribing decisions. [GPhC 10, 12 and 16] 6. Manage the risks and benefits associated with prescribing decisions appropriate to their defined scope of practice, including potential public health issues. [GPhC 17 and 26] 7. Demonstrate a critical understanding of their own role and the role of others in multi-professional teams to facilitate effective multidisplinary working and to identify their own future development needs. [GPhC 7, 12 and 27] 8. Demonstrate history-taking, clinical, diagnostic and record-keeping skills appropriate to their defined scope of practice. [GPhC 4, 19 and 20] 9. Critically apply clinical assessment and consultation skills appropriate to their defined scope of practice to inform or review a diagnosis; formulate a treatment plan and monitor the patient's response to treatment. [GPhC 4, 24 and 31] . 10. Provide evidence for all other mandated outcomes and behaviour indicators stipulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council to be eligible to apply for annotation as an independent prescriber. Aims: | To provide a supportive framework to develop the professional knowledge, skills and competence to prescribe safely and effectively and to achieve annotation as an Independent Prescriber. |
Skills: | * Analyse the local guidance on patient consent and confidentiality in relation to national guidance (knowledge and understanding, taught, facilitated/assessed [t/f/a]). * Explain the underpinning ethical issues involved in the use of unlicensed medicines in their specialist area of prescribing (knowledge and understanding, professional practical skill [t/f/a]). * Critically evaluate the influential sources of medicines and prescribing information in their specialist area (intellectual skill [t/f/a]) * Assess the role of each member of the healthcare team involved in prescribing for an individual patient (professional practical skill[t/f/a]) * Reflect on their own practice as a student in supplementary and independent prescribing and identify areas for continuous improvement (personal transferable skill [t/f/a]). * Present findings on specific patient conditions and recommend appropriate prescribing regiments (key skill - presentations [t/f/a]). * Analyse the differences in approaches to patient examination techniques (knowledge and understanding [t/f/a]) * Explain the effect that personal, patient and national influences may have on prescribing (knowledge and understanding, professional practical skill [t/f/a]). * Critically evaluate the use of a national guideline in the context of a Clinical Management or treatment Plan (intellectual skill[t/f/a]). * Reflect on their own practice in prescribing within the context of a Clinical Management and/or treatment Plan and identify areas for continuous improvement (personal transferable skill[t/f/a]). * Present findings on communication skills needed within a consultation setting using the Calgary-Cambridge Guide (key skill - presentations[t/f/a]). * Analyse the difference in disease monitoring for different patient groups within their prescribing specialty (knowledge and understanding). Explain the benefit of an evidence-based approach to prescribing in terms of patient safety and clinical management plans (knowledge and understanding, professional practical skill[t/f/a]). * Critically evaluate the use of a therapeutic class of medicines in their area of prescribing (intellectual skill[t/f/a]). * Assess the role self-audit in maintaining the safety and efficacy of the process of supplementary prescribing (professional practical skill[t/f/a]). * Reflect on their own development as an independent prescriber and identify areas for continuous improvement (personal transferable skill[t/f/a]). * Present findings on specific patient conditions, recommend appropriate prescribing and justify decision-making (key skill - presentations[t/f/a]). |
