Learning Outcomes: |
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
* Qualitatively assess an external climate and explain the consequences for the design of buildings. (K3) * Recognise how changes to the building design and construction will affect the environmental conditions within a building, to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being. (I3) * Make effective decisions relating to structural systems in the context of a design problem. (K2) * Explain the principal forces and actions affecting the structural behaviour. (K1) * Develop your initial understanding of sustainability, material use and embodied energy. (K4) * explain the science of fire, smoke generation and spread and how building design and specification can minimise risk. (K2) |
Synopsis: | Develop awareness of the environmental and structural aspects of building design. Concepts include structural statics, materials and appropriate load carrying systems. You will be able to make informed decisions about the orientation of buildings, the choice of building envelope and basic construction to achieve an optimum internal environment. Sustainable thinking relating to the design for the external and internal environments, and the choice of structural systems, form the basis of this Unit. |
Content: | Concepts of stability, determinacy and robustness;
Qualitative and quantitative analysis of forces and moments within structural systems; Common structural materials, structural elements and assemblies; Environmental impact of buildings; The internal environment in buildings; External influences on internal comfort levels. |
