Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
* Fundamental aspects affecting coastal environments and civil engineering works on coasts.
* Design of a range of coastal structures, including coastal sea defences, harbours, marinas and breakwaters.
* Main elements involved in water engineering including water supply, water quality and water treatment.


Aims: To develop an awareness of, enthusiasm and skills for conserving sustainable coast, and planning, design and construction of maritime structures on coasts; and the understanding of water supply, water quality and water treatment.

Skills: Intellectual skills
* To understand taught material and design issues and constraints.
* To apply the concepts and principles of fluid mechanics and wave & tidal theory to the solution of engineering problems.
* To synthesise material from Hydraulics 1 and 2 to understand the provision of water
Professional/Practical skills
* Analytical and design skills related to the material covered - assessed
Transferable/key skills
* To communicate ideas verbally and in writing clearly.
* To collect, analyse, synthesise and present technical information.

Content: Coastal Engineering: Wave and tidal theory, coastal environments, coastal processes, wave transformations, coastal defences and protection, coastal structures.
Water Engineering: Water supply, water quality, water treatment.
