Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the Unit, you will be able to:
1. meet the requirements of a given brief and prepare a coherent architectural design
2. devise and employ a clear ordering system within a design proposal which integrates organisational, spatial, environmental, structural and sustainability requirements
3. prepare a building proposal which addresses a specific urban realm in cultural and physical terms
4. recognise how the built environment is experienced by its users

Synopsis: You will explore and analyse a given urban and cultural context as part of the design process, through two projects. Project 1 is a joint project with engineers. Project 2 is an individual project. You will consider
  • environmental design principles
  • integration of material, fabric and structure
  • resilient infrastructure and/or creative, adaptive re-use strategies
  • design in a foreign (European) city

Content: This Unit comprises two design projects: a joint project with engineers, and an individual project. Both projects will help you to develop a clear conceptual and intellectual position as part of the architectural design process. Project 1 is a formative assessment which will provide feedback for Project 2.
Both projects examine the notion of culture and its appropriate architectural response to it, and its effect on human lives. The social purpose of an architect is developed in supporting lectures, with an emphasis on the responsiveness in the siting of buildings, the use of light and air, and materials and making. Responsible and sustainable architecture is further developed with a direct link to the regeneration of urban places by adaptive re-use of buildings, with a focus on structure/energy/water/materials efficiency. Relevant UN SDGs and RIBA Sustainable Outcomes are examined. Weekly group/individual tutorials are supplemented by seminars and workshops.
