1. Demonstrate knowledge of theories of urban design and the planning of communities; 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the influence of the design and development of cities, past and present on the contemporary built environment. |
Synopsis: | This Unit develops your knowledge of architectural theory and history of urban design; themes within contemporary city theory will be identified via a discussion of their proponents. |
Content: | This unit is structured around a series of lectures on different aspects of city history and theory, followed by a series of student presentations on specific urban theorists or movements. This could includes themes such as: Cities, Sustainability and Resilience to Climate Change; Emergency disaster relief, and refugee, housing; Migration and the Production of Cities; Non-western urban models and lessons to be learned; New Urbanism and Masterplanning. |
