By the end of the Unit, you will be able to:
1. Prepare building designs in response to a brief
2. Present designs using a range of media
3. Develop a conceptual, reflective and critical approach to architectural design that integrates and satisfies the aesthetic aspects of a building, the technical requirements of its construction and the needs of the user together with knowledge of the application of appropriate theoretical concepts to studio design projects and the way in which buildings into their local context
4. Investigate, appraise, select and integrate knowledge of appropriate constructional, structural and material systems that apply to the design and construction of a comprehensive design project
5. Demonstrate the ability to understand the regulatory requirements that apply to the design and construction of a comprehensive design project the skills to prepare designs that will meet building users' requirements and comply with UK legislation, appropriate performance standards and health and safety requirements.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the environmental and building services strategies and envelope design that apply to the design and construction of a comprehensive design project and the ability to integrate these in a design project and predict their operational and embodied carbon emissions |
Synopsis: | This Unit is the culmination of two years of design studio projects. You will develop a design to your own specific brief, completed during semester 1, as a vehicle to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills you have acquired during your studies. This is an individual project that explores contemporary urban conditions in a city. An over-arching agenda is provided, but to a brief and a on a site chosen by you. |
Content: | This is an individual design project that explores contemporary urban conditions in a city or an area defined by the locale from Design Studio 6.1, on a site chosen by the student. Relevant lectures will be organised that might include topics that expand on the cultural, political, and environmental issues particular to the place, as well as relevant planning and development control frameworks. Specialist consultant tutorials will supplement weekly architectural design tutorials. |
