Before taking this module you must take CH20151 OR take CH20152
In taking this module you cannot take CH30157 |
Learning Outcomes: |
After studying this unit the student should be able to:
* critically analyse methods for synthesising nanoparticles and properties and applications of nanophase materials * understand the composition and properties of biomaterials such as bones, skin and teeth * explain in detail how the structure of polymeric materials such as block copolymers influences their properties * critically evaluate methods for the preparation of functional polymers and how their properties may be controlled * critically assess recent literature examples of functional materials * suggest routes to designed materials possessing required properties for a particular application. |
Aims: | To provide a description of the chemistry of some modern materials and how technological applications drive development of new materials. |
Skills: | Data gathering (T, F), data analysis (T, F, A), critical thinking (T, F, A), problem solving (F, A). |
Content: | Nanoparticle synthesis, applications of nanoparticles, biomaterials (bones, skin, teeth) , Preparative and analytical methods for copolymers with varying structures, control of material properties by structural variation with examples (e.g. delivery, photoresists). |
