Synopsis: Gain introductory knowledge of the key sociological and philosophical concepts and values relating to education, schooling and childhood. You will explore historical and contemporary foundations of understanding these topics, and how they impact on children in the UK and in a global context, with a focus on children's rights and social justice. You will consider specific policies and debates, reflecting on how these signify or map to cultural priorities and social structures.

Content: In this unit, you will explore the differences between education and schooling, including the purposes that individuals, societies and governments assign to them (e.g. education and social mobility). We will look at the history of education in the UK and globally.

You will learn about key sociological and philosophical approaches to understanding the role of education in society through overviews of key contributors from different historical and national contexts. The unit will provide an overview from antiquity to 21st century with particular focus on modern critical approaches to education and social justice, including authors from the Global South.

You will also look at the approaches to education and social justice that underpin global agenda (e.g children's rights) and reflect on the role of education in both tackling and reproducing educational and social inequalities (e.g. related to social class, gender, race, disability).
